Concentrate Guide

Types of Vape Concentrates

Distillate, live resin, live rosin, diamonds, blends — here's what separates them, and how to pick the right one for your 510 cart.

Distillate

Distillate

The purest, most versatile concentrate.

Distillate is produced through a multi-stage distillation process that strips away everything except the target cannabinoid — typically THC or CBD. The result is a thick, translucent oil that can reach 80–99% potency.

Because the natural terpenes are removed during distillation, flavour and aroma are minimal unless food-grade or cannabis-derived terpenes are reintroduced afterward. This makes distillate the most neutral base for formulating flavoured carts.

Distillate is the most widely available concentrate and tends to be the most affordable. It works well in virtually any 510-thread cartridge and is a solid starting point for new consumers.

Live Resin

Live Resin

Flash-frozen freshness in every hit.

Live resin is made from cannabis plants that are flash-frozen immediately after harvest — before any drying or curing. This preserves the full terpene and cannabinoid profile that would otherwise degrade during the curing process.

The frozen plant material is then extracted using hydrocarbon solvents (typically butane or propane). The resulting concentrate is rich in terpenes, giving it a complex, true-to-plant aroma and flavour that distillate simply cannot replicate.

Live resin carts are prized for their entourage effect — the synergy between cannabinoids and terpenes that many consumers find produces a more nuanced, well-rounded experience compared to isolated distillate.

Live Rosin

Live Rosin

Solventless. As clean as it gets.

Live rosin starts the same way as live resin — with flash-frozen fresh plant material — but the extraction method is entirely solventless. Instead of hydrocarbons, heat and pressure are applied to fresh-frozen bubble hash to squeeze out the concentrate.

The absence of solvents means no residual chemicals in the final product. Live rosin is considered the premium tier of vape concentrates and commands a higher price point as a result.

The flavour and aroma profile is exceptional — often described as the closest you can get to the living plant in a vaporizable form. Terpene retention is outstanding, and the overall experience is smooth and clean.

Diamonds

Diamonds

Maximum potency. Crystalline purity.

Diamonds — also called THC-A crystalline or THCA diamonds — are the highest-potency concentrate available. They form when a supersaturated cannabinoid solution is allowed to crystallize slowly over days or weeks, producing solid, gem-like structures.

In their raw form, diamonds are nearly pure THCA (the non-psychoactive precursor to THC). When vaporized, the heat converts THCA to THC, delivering an extremely potent hit. Diamonds are often paired with terpene-rich sauce to create "diamonds in sauce" carts.

Because of their extreme potency, diamonds are best suited for experienced consumers with a high tolerance. A little goes a long way — they are not recommended as a starting point for new users.

Blend

Blend

The best of everything, combined.

Blend carts combine two or more concentrate types — most commonly distillate with live resin or live rosin terpenes — to hit a specific balance of potency, flavour, and price. The formulation varies by brand and product.

A common blend is distillate base + live resin terpenes: you get the high potency and consistency of distillate with the complex, authentic flavour of live resin. This is one of the most popular formats on the market today.

Blends give producers flexibility to dial in a specific experience profile. Always check the label for the ratio and source of each component — a "live resin blend" with only 5% live resin terpenes is very different from a 50/50 formulation.
